Soonnam Lim: A Certain Face I – XXVIII

‘A Certain Face I – XXVIII’ is a solo exhibition consisting of a series of 28 portraits by Soonnam Lim, inspired by celebrity culture and images found on social media.

Since 2012, Lim has explored the countless number of images uploaded on the internet as a major source of inspiration for her works. The title of this exhibition, A Certain Face, is a reference to the anonymity of the individuals who post these images, which in turn form the basis of Lims portraits. These portraits are the artists critical response to the prevalence social media sites saturated with personal images of its users. By reinterpreting these images as paintings, Lim restores the humanity and warmth otherwise lost in the vast terrain of profile pictures found on the internet.

Selfies feature heavily in Lims works. According to Lim, the homespun and exaggerated look of selfies expose frank, highly individual personalities, which she finds provocative when compared to conventional portraits. Selfies are usually taken in private settings - in front of a bathroom mirror, or in the bedroom and subjects strike exhibitionistic, extraverted poses, focusing on close-ups of their face. Lim shares her fascination with the narcissism and the vanity exposed by these highly stylised, seemingly superficial images, and her intimate and small-scaled portraits focus closely on nuanced facial expressions and gestures that demand our undivided attention.

Lims interest in popular Korean cultural icons also occupies a significant place in her oeuvre, reflecting the growing international popularity of Korean celebrities. This exhibition includes portraits of actors and K-pop stars including The Golden Boy (2012), a large-scale image of a popular singer G-Dragon, taken at an early stage of his career.

Lim approaches Koreas obsession with fame and celebrity with works that give little recognition to the star power of those depicted. Her portraits of the famous are far from realistic depictions, and she refrains from naming her subjects, preferring to give numeric titles to her works. The portrait a certain face VII uses lush forms and delicate layering of colours a stark transformation of the image of a popular actor Ha Jung-woo, from its original highly pixilated form, into something more expressive and sensitive.

Soonnam Lims works extend from a recurring motif in contemporary art practices, which explore the intersection between realism and conceptualism to question the authenticity of digital image and mass media, as well as challenge traditional techniques used in figurative paintings. Lim too, places painting in the context of newer media and contemporary social phenomena, and she does so by engaging with the abundance of digital images in everyday contemporary life.
